There was revolutionary upheaval too in Burma and Indonesia. Nationalist Aung Sang and the Burmese National Army had helped the British defeat the Japanese but the Burmese made it very clear that they wanted independence and soon. The situation was even more complicated in the Dutch East Indies. The Netherlands had been occupied by the Germans during the war and in peacetime the country was in desperate straits. The Dutch government needed to restore the flow of treasure from its former overseas domains. Mountbatten had little choice but to assist with the restoration of Dutch rule – though he had few illusions about its long-term viability. The Indonesian revolution that erupted with Japanese connivance had released cataclysmic political energies that few could control – not even the charismatic nationalist figurehead Sukarno. The revolutionary impetus came from young Indonesians known as ‘pemudas’. Benedict Anderson writes:
